Earth Day and Auto Care

For some, Earth Day is a time to take a look back at the past year and what they did or didn't do to respect our environment. For others, it's a 2-minute segment on the evening news they have to suffer through while they wait for the weekend forecast. You'd assume Earth Day and auto repair have nothing to do with each other, but since your car is your largest personal contribution to carbon emissions, keeping everything properly tuned is very important to Mother Earth!
Even the most routine maintenance you perform can have lasting environmental effects. Did you know that keeping your tires properly inflated can save gallons and gallons of gas every year -- as much as 3%! Changing your air filter can also make an impact on gas mileage. There are really no auto maintenance tasks that won't be beneficial to your car's efficiency, and that's going to help air quality.

Kill two birds with one stone and celebrate Earth Day by performing some summer maintenance. You'll be doing your part environmentally and keeping your car in shape at the same time. You should also check out the Earth Day Network Homepage for more earth conscious tips.

Chevrolet Posts 10th Straight Quarter of Record Global Sales

Chevrolet sold more than 1.18 million vehicles around the world in the first quarter of 2013 achieving its 10th consecutive quarter of record global sales on the strength of products like the Cruze compact car which recently surpassed the 2 million mark in total global sales since its launch in 2009.
General Motors Co. posted sales of more than 2.36 million in the first quarter of 2013, an increase of 3.6 percent, outpacing the industry which was up 1.5 percent, compared with the same period in 2012.

“ Chevrolet is growing around the world by leveraging GM’s global engineering and design expertise to deliver the right products in the right markets,” said Mark Reuss, GM president of North America. “And because a product like the Cruze has been developed for different markets with a wide variety of consumer needs, we have the flexibility to offer more performance and capability options – like the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel model that will be launching in the U.S. later this year.”

Guided by a new global vision, ‘Find New Roads,’ rooted in the brand’s legacy of ingenuity, Chevrolet is in the midst of its most aggressive new product rollout with 25 new or significantly redesigned products being launched globally including the all-new Corvette Stingray , Silverado and Impala in the United States and the Spin , Trax , Orlando and Colorado in several major markets around the world.

In the first quarter, Chevrolet U.S. sales totaled more than 469,000, up nearly 5 percent. Sales of the updated Traverse were up 22 percent for the quarter, and helped to boost GM’s total share of the U.S. crossover market 2.5 points.

Other markets posting sales increases include Brazil with sales of 141,000 up more than 3 percent primarily on the strength of the Onix, which accounted for nearly 24 percent of first quarter sales; China with sales of 165,000, up 2.5 percent; and Thailand with sales of 17,000, up 14 percent.

CHEVY INDYCAR AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK

Defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay started the No. 1 DHL Andretti Autosport Chevrolet on the pole, and finished the day atop the Victory Lane podium celebrating his 10th career-win, and his first at Barber Motorsports Park.

Hunter-Reay was credited with leading a race-high three times for 53 of the 90 laps that comprised the Grand Prix of Alabama, race two of the 2013 season. The win moved Hunter-Reay to third in the overall championship standings.

“Congratulations to Ryan Hunter-Reay on his hard-fought win today, and to Andretti Autosport on their second consecutive victory in 2013,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, IZOD IndyCar Series. “Back-to-back wins and poles, is a tremendous way for the Chevrolet IndyCar twin turbo V6 program to start the season. As we suspected, the competition was fierce and the win required very high execution levels from the team and tremendous focus and concentration from Ryan in the cockpit.  As we head to Long Beach, Team Chevy will be doing our part with the same tremendous focus and concentration to allow the Chevy IndyCar twin turbo V6 to put our Chevy Teams in a position to win again.”

With his third place finish, Helio Castroneves, No. 3 AAA Insurance Turbo Team Penske Chevrolet, jumped to the top of the point standings.  The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner started sixth and led once for a total of 25 laps during the race that saw only one caution flag for a total of four laps.
Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, finished fifth to give the Chevrolet IndyCar V6 engine three of the top-five finishing positions on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course.

James Hinchcliffe, No. 27 GoDaddy.com Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, was the point leader going into today’s event after his victory at St. Petersburg in the season-opening race, but sustained damage on lap one when several cars stacked-up in turn one.  Unable to return to competition, he was credited with the 26th finishing position, and now sits fifth in the point standings.

Scott Dixon (Honda) finished second, and Charlie Kimball (Honda) was fourth to complete the top-five finishers.

Next on the IndyCar schedule will be the Long Beach Grand Prix on April 21, 2013. The race on the Streets of Long Beach be televised live beginning at 4:00 p.m. (ET) by the NBC Sports Network (Verizon FiOS 90/590, DirecTV 220, DISH 159 and AT&T UVerse 640) and broadcast by the IMS Radio Network, including on Sirius and XM Channels 211 and www.indycar.com. Maintenance Tip Monday

Bodywork / paint

Keeping your paint finish in good condition

Only choose superior car detailing supplies to keep your car's interior and exterior like new. There are plenty of decent quality waxes and polishes on the market today and if the last time you waxed or polished your car was over a decade ago, things have changed considerably since then. The wax and polish compounds are far more sophisticated both in terms of protection from fading, the look of the finish, and the ease of application. For example Turtle Wax Ice gets rid of that old problem of white wax residue. Is a clean car a vanity thing? Partly, yes, but if you park under a tree where birds help repaint your car with recycled blueberries, that guck will come off a lot easier if it falls on a waxed paint job.
Tip: If you find a bird has pooped on your car, wash it off as quick as you can. There are compounds in bird waste that can damage most car paint jobs. If you leave it in the sun and the poop bakes on, you could end up with a dull spot in the paint.
Also: If you want to show your support for a cause, car magnets are better than bumper stickers. They don't damage the paint and are easy to move around and ultimately remove when the fad has passed.
