Chevy Wants To Teach You The Joy Of Rowing Your Own Gears

By Kurt Ernst l Jun 25, 2012

"After years of declining market share, sales of manual transmission cars are oddly on the rise. Take Chevy’s compact Sonic, for example: something like one-in-five leave the dealer’s showroom with a manual transmission.

Just a few decades back, learning to drive a manual transmission was an all-but-essential skill for anyone who took driving seriously. Back then, it was easy to find a family friend or neighbor who’d teach you to row your own gears, without the pressure of learning from a parent, brother or sister.

Today, finding someone who’s ready, willing and able to teach you the joys of manual gearbox driving may not be so easy. After all, most cars don’t even offer manual transmissions anymore, and those that do tend to be sporting (and expensive) in nature.

Tracking down a neighbor to help you master the clutch in a 1967 VW Beetle was one thing, but finding a neighbor who’ll loan you his Z06 Corvette Centennial Edition for the same purpose is more than a little unlikely.

Thankfully, Chevy wants to do something about this. Via the Chevy Sonic Facebook page, the automaker is giving away trips for four to the Stay Clutch driving school, where you’ll master the art of shifting under the tutelage of an unnamed “celebrity instructor.”

Winners also get tickets to the 2012 State Farm Home Run Derby and MLB All-Star Game, although we have no idea how they relate to learning to shift your own gears.

To get complete details on the Chevy Sonic Challenge, you’ll need to join CampusLIVE or log in under an existing account. Interested? Head on over to the Chevy Sonic Challenge Facebook page to enter."

Electric Ampera/Volt Range Extender Wins Green Engine Award

Tops field of 45 in ‘International Engine Award’ competition

2012chevroletvolt

2012-06-14

"STUTTGART, Germany – The range-extending 1.4-liter engine in the Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt won the “International Engine of the Year Award” for the best green engine in a field of 45 contenders, the first time in the 14-year history of the awards that a range-extending powertrain has won.

“Until the Volt and Ampera, the short range of battery electric vehicles has limited their suitability for everyday use,” said Uwe Winter, Opel vehicle line director and chief engineer, who accepted the prize from Engine Technology International magazine. “Our revolutionary propulsion system removes this obstacle by uniting the environmental friendliness of electric drive with the long range of a combustion engine. And the Best Green Engine Award is the highest recognition of this achievement.”

A panel of 76 motoring journalists from 35 countries judges 12 categories of excellence in powertrain engineering. There were 39 all-new engines in the contest.

A 16 kWh lithium ion battery powers the 111kW/150 hp electric motor of the Ampera/Volt. Depending on the style of driving and road conditions, distance of between 40 and 80 kilometers can be covered in the purely battery-operated mode, completely free of emissions. The wheels of the car are always powered electrically. In extended-range mode, which activates whenever the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, power is seamlessly inverted to the electric drive unit from a generator driven by the 1.4-liter, 63 kW/86 hp gasoline engine. Extended-range mode enables a total driving range of more than 500 kilometers without refueling.

The Ampera and Volt together have won numerous international awards including the “World Green Car of the Year 2011” and more recently the European “Car of the Year 2012."

Chevrolet Malibu Eco Achieves Double Safety Honors

2013malibudblsafetyhonors
"First and only all-new 2013 midsize car to receive top ratings

2012-06-05

DETROIT – The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is the first and only all-new 2013 midsize car to receive double honors for safety including a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Both are the highest ratings possible.

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries. The Malibu Eco achieved a “good” score in all four types of tests performed and has standard electronic stability control, which the IIHS requires for Top Safety Pick designation.

In achieving the 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score, the Malibu Eco was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program.  The overall score is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to evaluation for rollover resistance. Under the rating system, performances in three test segments are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.”

"With the Malibu Eco, Chevrolet has earned seven 2012 TOP SAFETY PICK awards," said IIHS President Adrian Lund.  "The IIHS and NHTSA results demonstrate GM's commitment to state-of-the-art crash protection."

Under this methodology, the Chevy Malibu Eco achieved an Overall Vehicle Score of five stars – the highest rating possible - even though some individual ratings, such as rollover, resulted in four stars.

The all-new 2013 Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 markets on six continents. It was designed and engineered to achieve top safety ratings and to meet pedestrian protection standards where such requirements exist. Last November, General Motors announced that the Malibu also earned a top five-star rating by the European New Car Assessment Program, known as Euro NCAP.

GM designs its new products to perform well in the metrics IIHS and NHTSA use to communicate crash worthiness to customers. There are 11 GM 2012 models with a 5-Star Overall Vehicle NCAP score and the Malibu Eco is among the first 2013 GM models to receive this rating. There are now 15 GM vehicles that have an IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick designation.

“We are now seeing the results from our commitment to design the highest-rated vehicles in the world in safety performance,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety. “Earning these top safety ratings demonstrates the strength of the Malibu’s advanced structure, overall crashworthiness and effectiveness of the vehicle’s state-of-the-art safety technologies.”

The all-new Malibu is designed and engineered to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting occupants if a crash occurs. Standard safety features include:

  • A body structure made up of 65 percent high strength and ultra-high strength steels
  • Driver and front passenger dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted side air bags and knee air bags and head curtain side air bags with rollover protection that cover front and outboard rear-seating rows
  • Rollover sensors which can activate the head curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. In a rollover, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant protection
  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control helps the driver maintain control by comparing the path being steered by the driver with the actual response and, when necessary, applying the brakes or adjusting the throttle or a combination of both
  • Four-channel disc brakes with ABS, full-function traction control and panic brake assist that activates when an emergency braking maneuver is detected. The system automatically develops additional brake pressure to more quickly engage ABS
  • Front safety belt pretensioners to reduce forward movement and load-limiting retractors to help manage forces during a collision
  • OnStar, which features the Automatic Crash Response System that uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in a crash that deploys the air bags.

The Malibu Eco is the sixth Chevy model within the 2012 model year to achieve a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety. The others include the Camaro Coupe, Sonic, Cruze, Volt and Traverse. The 2012 Malibu is also is a Top Safety Pick.

The Malibu Eco with fuel-saving eAssist technology is Chevrolet’s most fuel-efficient midsize car ever. It is on sale now in the United States with a base price including destination of $25,995, less than competitor full hybrid vehicles. Chevrolet is scheduled to roll out an all-new fuel-efficient 2.5L Ecotec engine on the full Malibu lineup this summer. A new turbo model will be available this fall."

Chevy Revives SS Rear-Drive Performance Sedan

"The limited-production 2014 Chevrolet SS, due in late 2013, draws inspiration from Super Sport vehicles of GM's past.

2014ss
(June 4, 2012) - General Motors will introduce a rear-wheel drive Chevrolet performance sedan in the U.S. market for the first time in 17 years, at the same time gives its NASCAR race car a makeover.

GM plans to start selling a limited production version of a full-size sedan with a V-8 engine called the Chevrolet SS, which will reach dealerships in late 2013. The vehicle, drawing inspiration from Super Sport vehicles of GM's past, will double as Chevrolet's next NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car.

The version sold to the public will be very similar to the vehicle raced on the NASCAR circuit, Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran said.

"The NASCAR car is so closely related to the design of the production car that for the near future, when we take the new Chevrolet SS NASCAR car out for testing, it will be camouflaged just because it looks so much like the production car," Doran said.

Chevy will stop racing the Impala sedan in NASCAR after this year. That decision comes a month after GM revealed a redesigned version of the Impala in an effort to inject new life into the vehicle.

The 2014 Chevy SS is based on the same global architecture of the Chevrolet Camaro and the new VF Commodore, which will be sold under GM's Australia brand, Holden.

"The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track," GM North America President Mark Reuss said in a statement. "I am personally looking forward to driving it."

GM first sold a vehicle with the SS tag in 1961, when a high-performance version of the Impala was sold with a sporty suspension and power brakes.

The company currently sells an SS version of the Camaro as a coupe and convertible.

Doran said he anticipated skepticism of the SS from people claiming the Chevy SS is "just a civilian version of the Caprice," a Chevy that is sold only to law enforcement agencies.

"The Caprice is a long-wheel-base version of the current Holden Commodore that has really been tailored for law enforcement," he said. "The new SS will be similar obviously — it will be on the same architecture — but they will not be the same car."

"We don't expect this to have the same volume or appeal of a mainstream car like a Malibu or Impala," he said. "This is very much seen as a low-volume, limited-production car designed to appeal to performance enthusiasts."
